Question re: pregnancy and nursing [Feb. 17th, 2007|08:11 pm]
Nursing while pregnant, Nursing two, or more

Just found out I am pregnant w/ #2 -- about 5wks along now.  Daughter is 18.5 months old --- i totally believe in childled weaning and want to make sure my supply won't dwindle - etc etc...
any tips/advice???  please tell me it can be done!  so many people are telling me to "expect" to lose my milk supply and for our daughter to wean ... which will break my heart.
help!

Colostrum? [Feb. 3rd, 2007|01:22 pm]

[mood |curiouscurious]

Just wondered if anyone remembered if and when they started making colostrum in pregnancy whilst still nursing an older child. I'm 25 weeks pregnant and nursing my 12 month old. About a month ago my supply really dropped but it does seem to be picking up again now, I'm actually able to hand express a bit whereas a month ago I could barely get a drop out.

I had assumed that my colostrum would have kicked in by now especially as I was making it at 16 weeks in my first pregnancy. I'm not at all concerned cos I know it will arrive eventually, just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the matter

Thanks :-)

What are the chances?? [Jan. 6th, 2007|06:20 pm]

Hiya! I have a quick question, but first some background. I'm 13 weeks pregnant and my son is 15 months old. He has just decided this week that he no longer wants to nurse...at all. I offer the boob, and he runs the other way. The only time he wants to use them are for pillows (like he'll act like he wants to nurse, but once I pull out the boob he lays his head on it). So, I still have 6 months to go in this pregnancy, at which time I'll be breastfeeding this new baby. What are the chances that my then 22 month old will want to breastfeed again? I'm not talking about asking just to make sure that he still can, but actual real nursing a great majority of the time? I'm just wondering cause if my son does not go back to nursing during this pregnancy it will be 6 months that he doesn't use this "skill," and I'm wondering if 6 months is enough time to completely lose interest? TIA!

We had a particularly revolting night last night. Morgan woke just after 11, and proceeded to wake every 1-2 hours, til about 4.30 when he finally slept til around 7.30. Sam, who usually sleeps through til at least 6, came in wanting boobie at 4am!!! Then about 5am, wanted to go to the toilet, then wanted to play!!! Chris took her back to her own bed and she stayed put til around 7.30 too by some miracle!!

Just now, I was lying on the floor next to Morgan, feeling particularly shattered from lack of sleep, and for the fact he was windy in the night, and needed me to walk him around too. Sam came over and requested boobie, so I obliged, while lying on the floor. Not a minute later, Morgan had made his way over to me, and had pulled up to kneeling next to me, so I gave him some too! He was really more interested in looking at Sam, but went on and off about 5 times before he decided that he'd had enough, and he's practice pulling up to stand, using my legs for holding on to! Clever boy! (still can't sit unaided, but he rolls, crawls and pulls up to knees, and now feet!)

Actually, on Thursday a similar thing happened...

I was lying on our bed, I'd just stripped it, and had just finished opening my mail, and having a quick flick thru my Aroha mag (LLL mag) when Sam asked for boobie. So, I obliged and she was quite happy. Morgan was sitting on the bed beside me, and when he noticed Sam over the other side, latched on, he was eyeing her up as if to say 'Oi! What are you doing? Wheres mine???' so I popped him on too. Sam saw him, and they were busily staring each other out across my chest. Then Sam started blowing raspberries on my, while still semi-latched on! Morgan thought this was a great joke and started up with his gorgeous belly laughs! That got all 3 of us going - I'm sure we were a sight, lying on the bed, all of us giggling, while my two gorgeous kidlets were still latched on!! :D

Won't Skip Colostrum Stage Will I? [Dec. 14th, 2006|01:26 pm]

K, dumb question I'm sure. But I'm now 30 weeks pregnant. And have an 18 month old nursing. The last couple of days I've actually experienced engorgement (new for me because when I had Connor I had such low supply that just getting up to" normal" was a struggle). It is what I imagine it's supposed to feel like when your milk fully comes in. Does that mean I am not making colostrum anymore? Will the new baby not get colostrum? Or has Connor (who has been nursing more the last week or so due to a cold) just upped the supply of colostrum or whatever mix is in there right now? TIA for any responses!

Hi everyone! I'm new! I decided to join because I posted last night in breastfeeding about how I felt like I'm a horrible mommy because I LOATHE breastfeeding my 15 month old now that I'm pegnant. The ladies there made me feel normal again and let me know that this was a normal pregnancy related feeling, and that if I stuck with it it would eventually get better! So, I've decided to stick it out and join a "support group" of other moms who've done the same thing!

How can I tell if my supply has dropped if I don't pump? I'm nearly 18 weeks pregnant and my 11 month old seems to be nursing pretty much the same except in the evenings before bed and she can be on for hours! Whilst I don't mind feeding her for that long if she's getting what she wants and needs, I'm terrified that I'm going to stop making enough milk for her. Any suggestions?

my 18-month old decided to self-wean, so I decided to wean my 2.5 year old as well. something about the younger one quitting while the older one kept going was weird to me... she took it well, though. last night she asked for nummies and I offered her water instead. she took the water and fell asleep. I was fearing a big outburst, but it didn't happen.

I'll be glad for the break, brief though it may be. I guess I will be nursing one, not three, come march. I'm not closed to the possibility of someone deciding to nurse again after the baby is born, but I can't say I'm too sad about my current new arrangement. nursing during pregnancy isn't fun.

Hi, just found this community so will probably be asking for advice a lot in the next few months!

My name's Evelyn, I'm 16 weeks pregnant with my second baby and still nursing my 10 month old daughter Esmé about 7-8 times a day. Initially I had some really bad nipple pain when I was feeding her but now it seems to have gone or I've got used to it. The main problems now tend to be morning sickness (or as it was yesterday "all day" sickness!) and feeling ill now that she's starting to press on my bump.

I've also noticed that I'll occasionally get stabbing pains deep in my breasts, not necessarily when I'm nursing her. I'm assuming these are pregnancy related?

Also could anyone give me some tips on nursing with a bump. Normally I use a nursing pillow and have Esmé cradled against me. Sometimes in the mornings or when I'm feeling ill we will feed lying down in bed but most of the time its with the pillow.

Thanks in advance :-)
